Virtual Farm Trip

New York Beef Council and the Iowa Beef Industry Council invite you to take a virtual field trip to explore the beef lifecycle. The live streamed trip will start on a NY cow-calf farm and end with a tour of an Iowa feedlot!

With the precautions being taken to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus, New York Beef Council (NYBC) and Iowa Beef Industry Council (IBC) are offering teachers, parents, and students of all grades the opportunity to connect individually to this virtual field trip, which will be live streamed via the NYBC and IBC Facebook pages and websites.

DATE: Thursday, June 11
Time: 10 a.m Central/ 11 a.m Eastern

Join us as we connect directly with Betsy Hicks at Maple Acres in McGraw, New York, and Nate Graham at Graham Feedlot in Cherokee County, Iowa for a LIVE tour of their farms, and a LIVE question and answer session.

Maple Acres is a registered cow/calf beef farm that has been in the Hicks family since 1809, spanning seven generations. Trip attendees will learn how the Hicks Family uses technology and science to enhance how they care for and feed their herd, which includes 36 mother cows.

Graham Feedlots is a fourth generation family farm in Northwest Iowa where they raise crops, maintain a feedlot and graze commercial cows. Nate farms alongside his dad and takes great pride in instilling valuable life skills such as hard work and a passion for caring for livestock and the land. Nate will share the symbiotic relationship between row crops and cattle, especially as it relates to the feedlot, and provide an inside look at the science and best management practices implemented to care for the cattle each day.

  • Do not try to find/watch the trip too early. Since these are live streams, there will be no video posted until we near the start of the trip. We recommend visiting the sites mentioned above about five minutes prior to the scheduled start of the trip.
  • We will try to start the live stream a few minutes prior to the scheduled start time. This will give us time to make sure the feed is working and that you can see/hear us prior to the scheduled start time.
  • The ability to take live questions/comments is limited to the participants on our Facebook page. We will monitor the questions coming in from Facebook and try to have our farmer answer as many as they can.
  • Those without Facebook accounts tuning in from this page (nybeef.org/virtualfarmfieldtrips) will not be able to ask live questions during this trip. However, if you are a teacher making this trip a part of your curriculum, you may submit questions you would like to have answered for your students while registering for the trip (Registration is NOT required for individual students/parents for this trip).
Thank you for your interest in this program and all you are doing to continue to find creative ways to educate our children during these uncertain times. We look forward to connecting with you!
