Beef for the Classroom

Eligibility and Funding

Grant Amount:

Up to $150 per school year for eligible educators.

Eligible Educators:

Family and Consumer Science, Agriculture, 4-H educators, and ProStart instructors teaching foods/nutrition or related courses focused on beef in the state of New York.

Allowable Expenses:

Funds may be used to purchase beef products and other ingredients needed to complete beef-focused recipes or dishes as part of a classroom curriculum only.

Application Process

Application:

Complete the BFC Application Form and obtain approval before making any purchases.

Applications are closed for the 2026-2027 school year.

Classroom Training:

Lessons may be conducted at any time during the school year.

Reimbursement Guidelines

Evaluation:

Following your lesson, simply complete the BFC Evaluation Form and submit receipts and photos.

To receive reimbursement, submit both the Beef for the Classroom evaluation form and receipts for beef purchases using the form below.

Submission of Documentation:

After receiving your evaluation form and receipts, the NYBC will issue a reimbursement check payable to your school. No checks will be issued to individuals. Receipts must be provided for reimbursement.

Judicious Spending:

Please consider your class size when purchasing beef to maximize the number of schools benefiting from this program. The grant offers a maximum of $150 in beef purchases per school.

Single Submission Policy:

If you plan to teach multiple lessons involving beef, please wait until all lessons are completed or the $100 maximum has been spent before submitting your paperwork. Only one reimbursement check per school will be issued each school year.

Additional Notes

Receipts:

The receipts should list the name of the store where the beef was purchased. 

Restrictions:

Funds are for use in classroom or lab settings only and cannot be used for school BBQs or other non-educational school events.

Annual Reapplication:

A new application must be submitted each school year. Failure to adhere to these guidelines may affect your school’s eligibility for future funding.

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The Beef Checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen's Beef Promotion and Research Board (CBB), which administers the national Beef Checkoff program, subject to USDA approval. Consumer-focused and producer-directed, CBB and its State Beef Council partners are the marketing organization for the largest segment of the food and fiber industry.
