May is a time to celebrate and recognize all that is encompassed in the New York beef industry. During this month we stop to appreciate the long hours and hard work that goes into calving, feeding, processing, and marketing the animals we raise and the people behind our industry’s success. We draw attention to the important nutritional value of beef and the positive economic impact our industry brings to the communities in which you farm.

As children continue learning from home New York Beef Council (NYBC) will be offering students and their parents the opportunity to virtually tour a beef farm! On May 7th at 10:00am Chrissy Claudio of O’Mara Farms beef farm in Hubbardsville, NY will be partnering with NYBC and New York Agriculture in the Classroom to extend a live tour of the farm. Throughout the tour, attendees will be introduced to the beef lifecycle, what beef animals eat, how they are cared for and handled, as well as, an overview of some of the steps taken on the farm to be good stewards of the environment and land. No pre-registration is required to tune into the tour which will be live streamed on the New York Beef Council Facebook page and at www.nybeef.org/virtualfarmtrip. Following the trip, a recording will also be available for later viewing.

Throughout the month of May NYBC will be releasing a series of “NY Farmer Recipe” videos highlighting farm moms from across the state. Each video highlights a different beef recipe which is prepared while Jean O’Toole, Executive Director of the New York Beef Council, interviews each of the farm women to share a glimpse of farm life with consumer viewers. Topics such as animal care and environmental stewardship are also discussed. Videos will be released throughout May starring Annie Trowbridge of Trowbridge Farms, Theresa Tommell of CN Tommell Cattle Company, Nicole Tommell of MMT Cattle Inc., Chrissy Claudio of O’Mara Farms, Erin Hull of Lucky 13 All Natural Red Angus Beef. A special Mother’s Day video will be released featuring mother-daughter duo Alana Welker and Dawn Keppler of SK Herefords.  The videos will be shared across NYBC’s social media platforms. Full videos and recipes can be found on the New York Beef Council YouTube page.

“Farmer Fridays” will continue through the month of May. Follow New York Beef Council on Facebook to see a different farm highlighted each Friday. New this month NYBC will be joined by one of our state partner beef councils, South Dakota Beef Industry Council, to highlight beef production in both NY and SD. The Facebook Lives scheduled May 15th, 22nd, and 29th will highlight similarities and differences in production practices. Each live stream will include a Q&A session with consumers. The Facebook Live scheduled for May 15th will highlight the cow-calf sector of the industry. On May 22nd a New York based veterinarian and a veterinarian in South Dakota will join the live stream to discuss animal care on both small- and large-scale operations. Finally, on May 29th two feedlot operators will discuss and answer questions about their operations.

That’s not all! New York Beef Council Facebook and Instagram pages will also have the opportunity to follow along as NYBC shares updates of our “adopted calf” which was born and is being raised at New Penn Farm in Truxton, NY. Followers will have the chance to help name and learn about the calf as it grows. Throughout May followers can also partake in addition fun challenges like our Beef Parody competition and “Hamburger Hop” showdown. Be sure to follow New York Beef Council on Facebook to join in on the fun.
