“The beef-based program will help fuel athletes at 18 New York high schools and their communities"

Rome, NY (January 2023) – Athletes from 18 New York high schools and their communities will benefit from the Build Your Base Program throughout the 2022-23 sports season. The collaborative program written in partnership between Sanford Health, the Sanford Sports Science Institute, and with funding from the South Dakota Beef Industry Council (SDBIC) utilizes BEEF as its premier protein and instills positive whole plate nutrition concepts for athletes and their families  The partnership provides online educational material and resources along with science-based strategies that can be put into action to perform better and be healthier! With the implementation of this program, participants have the ability to gain access to simple-to-follow, easy-to-make beef-powered recipes and meal plans that support athletic performance and recovery. Helping student-athletes eat to perform better on the field and court is second to helping them gain the nutrition skills needed to be healthy throughout their life

NYBC provided over 1600 high school athletes with beef jerky for their locker room as a nutrition recovery food after a practice or game along with over $11,000 of beef purchase reimbursement. The beef purchase reimbursement allows the high schools to make a post-game recovery meal to teach the athletes how to cook beef and use it as their main protein source for nutrition.

The following schools will be a part of the 2022/2023 season:   Chenango Forks, Dryden Central School District, East Syracuse Minoa, General Brown, Indian River, Central School District, Livonia High School, New Hartford HS Cross Country, North Rockland High School, Owego Free Academy, Oyster Bay, Pioneer, PS 042 Occupational Training Center, Sidney High School, South Park, Susan E Wagner High School, Vertus High School, Waverly High School, Westhill Warriors

About the Beef Checkoff:

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The Checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States may retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen's Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
