Researcher, author and nutrition scientist Wayne
Campbell, Ph.D., presented the evidence-based webinar entitled Can a Mediterranean Diet with Lean Meats
Reduce Cardiovascular Risk? As a member
of the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines Scientifc Advisory Committee, Campbell offered
insight into the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans on lean meat being
part of a recommended healthy diet pattern.
Campbell examined a body of research on diet and
cardiovascular health. He reviewed strong evidence that shows the heart health
benefits of Mediterranean diets inclusive of red meat, including a new
published study that shows a Mediterranean-style eating pattern with lean red
meat can improve cardiometabolic risk1.
The RD participants were able to assess the evidence
and offer practical tips to help clients incorporate lean meats in healthy
eating patterns.
The outcomes were very positive. Over 90 percent
of the RDs responded they will apply the knowledge in their nutrition practice.
Those who would “recommend beef just as likely as other proteins” more than
doubled from 30 percent to 63 percent.
“This was an excellent webinar!” wrote Judith
Prince, R.D., webinar participant.
“It was
fantastic! The collaboration between the New York Beef Council and NYSAND has
resulted in member continuing education development. Thank you for a great
experience,” said Carol DeNysschen, Ph.D., President of NYSAND.
“Dietitians are very dedicated to help the
families eat healthfully. It is very rewarding to see the science strengthen
their practice!” said Cindy Chan Phillips, MBA, R.D., NYBC director of nutrition
education.
Phillips’ work with the NYBC is financially
supported by the Kansas and Nebraska Beef Councils.
